Mientras concluía la construcción del Spha-T entre en todo un proceso de selección de lo que sería mi siguiente proyecto; una de las cosas que tenía claro respecto a esta nueva maqueta era que debía ser algo de la trilogía clásica, dado que este año se celebran los 30 años de “El imperio contraataca” (ESB) llegue a la conclusión de que debía ser algo de esa película y que era tiempo de volver a construir algo en escala 1:18 (escala de los muñecos de Hasbro 3 ¾”), pensé entonces en construir un AT-AT en escala 1:18 pero con la salida del juguete de Hasbro pensé que no era el momento y revisando la escena de la batalla de Hoth vi un modelo que siempre me encanto, el AT-ST que a compaña a los AT-AT despejando el terreno para su avance, pensé que era perfecto ya que es pequeño, y por eso muy fácil de construir en escala 1:18…. Ya tenía mi siguiente proyecto.
While I concluded the construction of the Spha-T enters on a selection process of which it would be my following project; one of the things that it knew clearly with respect to this new scale model was that it had to be something of the classic trilogy, since this year the 30 years of “The Empire strikes back” (ESB) are celebrated reaches the conclusion that it had to be something of that film and that already was time to return to construct something in 1:18 scale (scale of the Hasbro´s Action Figures on 3 ¾”), I thought then about construct an AT-AT on 1:18 scale but with the release of the Hasbro´s toy I thought that it was not the moment to it and reviewing the scene of the battle of Hoth I saw a model that always I enchant me, the AT-ST that company to the AT-AT clearing the land for its advance, I thought that it was perfect that he is small, and for that reason very easy to construct in 1:18 scale…. I´ve already had my following project.
La mayoría de fans de StarWars piensa que solo existe un modelo de AT-ST pero la verdad es que existieron 2 diseños para este pequeño caminante en la saga de StarWars. El primero de ellos se creó durante el proceso de producción de ESB y fue creado por el diseñador e ilustrador Joe Johnson quien trabajo en el diseño de los vehículos construyendo un modelo a escala de este caminante bípedo durante el desarrollo de conceptos para las escenas de la batalla de Hoth, el modelo fue visto por George Lucas en una de sus visitas habituales al departamento de arte y le gusto tanto que decidió incluirlo en una escena de la batalla de Hoth como vehículo de apoyo de los gigantes AT-AT, de esta manera se usa el modelo creado por Johnson en el stop-motion de la escena y ese es el AT-ST que vemos por solo unos segundos (y de muy lejos) durante la batalla de Hoth.
The majority of StarWars´s fans thinks that only exists an AT-ST model but the truth is that 2 designs for this small walker in the StarWars´s saga existed. First of them was created during the production´s process of ESB and was created by the designer and illustrator Joe Johnson who work in the design of the vehicles constructing a model concerning this biped traveller during the development of concepts for the scenes of the battle of Hoth, the model was seen by George Lucas in one of its regular visits to the Art department and him taste as much that it decided to include it in a scene of the battle of Hoth like a support´s vehicle of giants AT-AT, this way is used the model created by Johnson in stop-motion of the scene and that is AT-ST that we only see by seconds (and of very far) during the battle of Hoth.
Para “El Regreso del Jedi” (ROTJ) Lucas decidió darle más protagonismo a este vehículo creado por Johnson para las escenas de la batalla de Hoth, pero en el periodo transcurrido (3 años) entre la producción de ESB y ROTJ el modelo se dañó por un mal almacenaje y es entonces que a insistencia de Lucas se intenta reconstruir el modelo a partir de las pocas fotos de archivo conservadas, pero en el proceso se decidió hacerle modificaciones presentando finalmente en pantalla un AT-ST bastante diferente al que vemos en ESB.
For “the Return of the Jedi” (ROTJ) Lucas decided to give more protagonism to this vehicle created by Johnson for the scenes of the battle of Hoth, but in the period passed (3 years) between the production of ESB and ROTJ the model was damaged by a bad storage and is then that to insistence of Lucas is tried to reconstruct the model from the few conserved picture of file, but in the process they was decided to do modifications to it finally displaying in screen a quite different AT-ST which we see in ESB.
En las siguientes imágenes vemos ambas versiones del AT-ST, pueden observar que en la versión del AT-ST ESB las patas son bastante más largas, la cabina es muy pequeña lo que le da una apariencia más espigada y estilizada además presenta un extraño símbolo en color naranja a un costado. En la versión del AT-ST ROTJ vemos que las patas se acortan, la cabina crece bastante en tamaño y desaparece todo símbolo y color dándole una apariencia mucho más pesada y que finalmente es la que se hiso más popular y clásica. Definitivamente la versión vista en ROTJ es la más popular pero a mi particularmente me gusta más la versión ESB (mucho mas esbelta y estilizada) y ese es un punto que influyo mucho en mi decisión respecto a mi siguiente trabajo en maqueta.
In the following images we see both versions of AT-ST, you can observe that in the version of AT-ST ESB the legs are rather longer, the cabin is very small what it gives a more slender and stilized appearance to it and also presents a strange orange color´s symbol to a flank. In AT-ST ROTJ´s version we can see that the legs are shorter than the other one, the cabin grows enough in size and disappears all symbol and color giving it a much more heavy appearance and that finally is the one that become more popular and classic. Definitively the version seen in ROTJ is most popular but particularly I like more the ESB´s version (slim and much more streamlined) and that is a point that influence much in my decision with respect to my following work in scale model.

Este cambio en la apariencia del AT-ST creó muchas confusiones y creo que la más visible (para fans y coleccionistas) es el juguete escala 3 ¾” lanzado por Kenner dentro de la antigua colección Vintage. Como se sabe el primer juguete del AT-ST 3 ¾” fue lanzado para el estreno de ESB en 1980, la forma de la cabina que vemos en el juguete es la que corresponde al antiguo diseño del AT-ST visto en la batalla de Hoth (mas pequeña y con aristas curvas), sin embargo a este juguete le pusieron unas patas más cortas (tal y como el AT-ST Endor), tiene el simbolo naranja del AT-ST ESB, y unos pies enormes sacados de algún juguete de Fisher Price (j aj aja ajaja ja jaa, es una broma), esto creo una enorme confusión respecto a la apariencia real del AT-ST; luego este juguete fue relanzado para el estreno de ROTJ en 1983 sin modificaciones y vendido como el famoso AT-ST Endor. Posteriormente se vuelve a producir con el lanzamiento de la colección Hasbro en 1995 y nuevamente sin modificaciones pasando a formar parte de dioramas y juegos de la batalla de Endor sin que los fans tomaran mucha consciencia que ese no era el AT-ST correcto sino un hibrido entre la versión ESB y la versión ROTJ, un verdadero Frankenstein (y que yo también moría por poseer). El error solo fue corregido recientemente con el lanzamiento en el 2009 del primer AT-ST Endor de la colección (si, el primero) lanzado en la colección Saga de Hasbro en donde por primera vez se reproduce un juguete con la apariencia correcta del vehículo visto en la batalla de Endor.
This change in the appearance of AT-ST created many confusions and I think that the most visible (for fans and collectors) it´s the toy on 3 ¾” scale release by Kenner on the old Vintage collection. As is known the first toy 3 ¾”´s AT-ST of were release for the ESB´s opening in 1980, the form of the cabin that we see in the toy is the one that corresponds to the old design of AT-ST seen in the battle of Hoth (smaller and with curved edges), nevertheless to this toy they put shorter legs (as Endor´s AT-ST), it has the orange simbol of the ESB´s AT-ST, and enormous feet to it removed from some Fisher Price´s toy (j aj aha ajaja ja jaa it´s a joke), this created an enormous confusion with respect to the real appearance of AT-ST; soon this toy was relaunched for the opening of ROTJ in 1983 without modifications and sold like the famous AT-ST Endor. Later one becomes to again produce in 1995 and with the launching of the Hasbro´s collection without modifications being happened to form part of dioramas and games of the battle of Endor without fans took much conscience that was not the correct AT-ST but a hybrid between ESB´s version and ROTJ´s version, a true Frankenstein (and that I also died to own). The error was only corrected recently with the launching on 2009 of the first AT-ST Endor (yes, the first one) in the Hasbro´s Saga colection where a toy with the correct appearance of the vehicle seen in the battle of Endor was reproduces for the first time.

Viendo la historia detrás del AT-ST se puede decir que nunca existió un juguete del AT-ST Hoth, es mas nunca existio un juguete del AT-ST en 3 3/4", al menos nunca con la forma correcta hasta el 2009 con el primer AT-ST endor, lo que tuvimos siempre fue un AT-ST hibrido, por todo esto era muy tentador construirlo ya quería un vehículo pequeño y más rápido de producir (lo que no quiere decir que sea fácil), no construyo nada en escala 1:18 desde la construcción del caminante AT-TE y además quería que mi siguiente proyecto sea de la trilogía clásica (y que sea de ESB) y finalmente es un vehículo que me encanta. Así que este será el siguiente proyecto, un pequeño homenaje a ESB y al casi anónimo AT-ST Hoth que por cierto me parece el mejor de las 2 versiones.
Seeing history behind AT-ST it is possible to be said that never been a toy of Hoth´s AT-ST, so never been an AT-ST´s toy in 3 3/4" scale, at least never existed with the correct form till the 2009 with the first Endor´s AT-ST , which we always had was a hybrid AT-ST, by all this was very tempting to construct it I already wanted a small and faster vehicle to produce (what does not mean that is easy), I do not construct anything in scale 1:18 from the construction of the AT-TE walker and in addition i wanted that my following project be from the classic trilogy (and that is of ESB) and finally is a vehicle that enchants to me. So this it will be the following project, a small tribute to ESB and the almost anonymous Hoth´s AT-ST that me by the way seems to me the best one of the 2 versions.
